Bitcoin or Ethereum. You can only pick one for the next five years. Which do you choose and why?

The two biggest arguments in crypto and they have not been settled in 15 years. Bitcoin: fixed supply of 21 million, the original, institutional backing through ETFs with $97 billion in net assets, held by BlackRock and Fidelity, recognized by the US government as a strategic reserve asset. Digital gold. Store of value. Simple and boring by design. Ethereum: programmable, the foundation of DeFi, NFTs, stablecoins, real world asset tokenization, and smart contracts. $68 billion in DeFi TVL. Arthur Hayes has his entire family office in Ethereum and DeFi. Standard Chartered targets $7,500 by year-end. Bitcoin is up roughly 60 percent annualized over the past decade. Ethereum has done more in bull markets and less in bear markets. The ETH/BTC ratio is at multi-year lows right now. Either Ethereum is deeply undervalued relative to Bitcoin or the market is correctly pricing Bitcoin's institutional advantage as permanent. If you could only hold one for five years and had to decide today, what do you pick?

This question will look very different in five years depending on whether the CLARITY Act passes and whether Alpenglow ships on Solana. The real competition is not Bitcoin versus Ethereum. It is whether Ethereum maintains its smart contract dominance against Solana, Avalanche, and the next chain that does not exist yet. Bitcoin does not have this problem. That matters for a five year hold.

Bitcoin. Not because Ethereum is bad. Because the risk profile is different. Bitcoin has one thing it does and it does it better than anything else on earth. Ethereum has a hundred things it does and every one of them has a competitor trying to do it cheaper. The simplicity premium is real and institutions understand it. The ETF flows prove it.
