Three people I know personally have lost crypto to hacks or scams this year. Here is what they all had in common.

Three separate cases in my network in 2026. First: $23,000 in USDT drained from a MetaMask wallet after clicking a link in a Discord server that looked like an official announcement from a project they held. Second: an entire Binance account emptied through a SIM swap. The attacker ported the phone number, bypassed SMS 2FA, withdrew everything in under 20 minutes. Third: a hardware wallet user who stored their seed phrase in a photo on their iCloud. Phone stolen. Cloud account compromised. Gone. In all three cases, the same pattern: the actual wallet or exchange security was fine. The failure was in how they stored or shared access to it. Hardware wallets, 2FA, cold storage, these things work. The human layer is almost always where the breach happens. What is your current security setup and is there anything you have changed after seeing people around you get hit?

The iCloud seed phrase story is the one that keeps repeating. People do not think of their cloud storage as a security risk because it feels private. But iCloud, Google Drive, and email are the first things an attacker checks if they get into your accounts. Write your seed phrase on paper, put it in a fireproof safe, and never photograph it. If that sounds extreme you have not lost $50,000 yet.
