How do you actually store large amounts of crypto safely? Because the exchange is not the answer.

Three types of crypto holders in 2026. Type one stores everything on Binance or Coinbase. Convenient. One hack, one insolvency, one account freeze and it is gone. Type two uses a hardware wallet. Ledger or Trezor. The seed phrase is on paper in a drawer. Better. But one house fire, one flood, one theft and that drawer is gone. Type three has a system. Hardware wallet for daily access. Seed phrase split across two physical locations using a steel backup plate. A small emergency amount on exchange for liquidity. Knows exactly what happens if they die tomorrow and how their family recovers the funds. Most people are type one. Most people who have been in crypto for more than five years are type two. Very few people are type three. At what point does the size of your crypto holdings justify a type three system? And what does your current setup actually look like?

Crossed into type three territory when my portfolio hit a number I would not want to lose. Ledger Nano X for regular use. Seed phrase engraved on steel, one copy at home and one at my parents' house in a different city. Emergency access instructions sealed in an envelope with my will. It took one afternoon to set up and I never think about it anymore. The peace of mind is worth every minute.
