Warsh just spoke at Jackson Hole. Bitcoin dropped $1,000. He said he struggles to see financial conditions as restrictive. What does that mean for September?
Bitcoin was at $79,000 heading into the speech. After Warsh finished, it was at $78,000. His exact words: this summer's inflation figures are better than expected, but do not tell me that the underlying trends have changed significantly. And the one that really moved markets: I am struggling to define the financial conditions as restrictive. That last sentence is the most important. The Fed holds rates at 3.50 to 3.75 percent specifically to create restrictive conditions. If Warsh does not consider those conditions restrictive, the next move could be a hike, not a cut. The theme of this year's Jackson Hole was literally Financial Innovation and Payments. First time in the event's history. Warsh's own portfolio before confirmation had stakes in more than a dozen blockchain protocols. And yet the speech read as hawkish. Two catalysts remain for crypto in September. Expanded Treasury buybacks start September 9. The CLARITY Act cloture vote is September 15. How are you positioning going into those two dates after today's speech?
