How Do You Recover a Crypto Wallet After Losing the Device?

If you lose your Ledger, MetaMask phone, or another wallet device, does that mean your crypto is gone? From what I understand, the important thing is whether you still have the wallet's recovery phrase or private keys, but the exact recovery process can be confusing depending on the wallet. Has anyone here actually recovered a crypto wallet after losing or breaking the original device? What steps did you take, and what mistakes should someone avoid? Never share your seed phrase or private key with anyone, even if they claim they can help.

Yeah I went through this last year when my phone got stolen. Genuinely one of the most stressful 48 hours of my life until I figured it out. The good news is you are right, the device is basically worthless without the seed phrase. I recovered my MetaMask by downloading the app fresh on a new phone and hitting the import using seed phrase option. Typed in my 12 words in the correct order and everything was back exactly as I left it, every token, every network. The mistake I almost made was panicking and clicking on some sketchy recovery service that DM'd me on Twitter within like an hour of me posting about losing my phone. Do not touch those. They are all scams.

Lost my Ledger hardware wallet in a house move two years ago. The device itself is just a signing tool, your crypto never actually lives on it, it lives on the blockchain. I bought a new Ledger, went through the setup, selected restore from recovery phrase instead of creating a new wallet, entered my 24 words and that was it. Maybe 10 minutes total. The only thing I would add is to double check the order of your words before you start typing because getting one word in the wrong position means you recover the wrong wallet and you will spend an hour thinking something went wrong when the phrase itself is fine.
