Why Is My Crypto Transaction Still Pending?

I made a crypto transaction recently and it stayed pending much longer than I expected. What actually causes a crypto transaction to remain pending? Is it usually network congestion, a low transaction fee, or something else? If you've had a Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other crypto transaction stuck on pending, how long did it take to confirm and what did you do? Would be useful to hear some real experiences because this can be pretty confusing when you're new to crypto.

Happened to me with an Ethereum transfer during a busy period. Set the gas fee too low because I was trying to save a few dollars and the transaction just sat there for almost 6 hours. Eventually used the speed up option in MetaMask which basically resubmits the same transaction with a higher fee. Confirmed within a few minutes after that. Lesson learned, check the network conditions before sending especially if it is not urgent.

Bitcoin one took me by surprise. Sent on a Sunday thinking it would be quick and it sat pending for nearly a day because I used the economy fee option. Nothing I could do but wait since Bitcoin does not have a speed up feature like Ethereum does. It confirmed eventually but I was refreshing the block explorer every 20 minutes like a crazy person. Now I always check mempool.space before sending to see how congested the network actually is.
