What Happens If You Send USDT to the Wrong Network?

I almost made this mistake recently and realized how confusing crypto networks can be. If you send USDT to the correct wallet address but choose the wrong network, is the crypto actually lost? For example, what happens when USDT is sent through BSC, Ethereum, Tron, or another network when the receiving platform expects something different? Has anyone here experienced a wrong-network crypto transfer? How did you check whether the funds were recoverable? Would be useful to hear real experiences, especially from people who managed to recover their funds.

Sent USDT via BSC to a wallet that only supported ERC-20. Absolute panic for about an hour. Turned out the funds were visible on BscScan but the receiving exchange simply did not support that network. Contacted support, they recovered it manually after a few days but charged a fee. Not all exchanges will do this though so it really depends on where it landed.

Sent TRC-20 USDT to a Binance deposit address that was expecting ERC-20. Binance actually recovered it automatically after about a week with no fee because it was a large enough amount. For smaller amounts they sometimes will not bother. The lesson I took from it is to always triple check the network on both ends before hitting send, takes 10 seconds and saves a lot of stress.
