How Do You Recover a Crypto Wallet After Losing the Device?

If you lose your Ledger, MetaMask phone, or another wallet device, does that mean your crypto is gone? From what I understand, the important thing is whether you still have the wallet's recovery phrase or private keys, but the exact recovery process can be confusing depending on the wallet. Has anyone here actually recovered a crypto wallet after losing or breaking the original device? What steps did you take, and what mistakes should someone avoid? Never share your seed phrase or private key with anyone, even if they claim they can help.

Dropped my phone in water last year and thought I had lost everything. Turned out fine because I had my 12 word phrase written on paper in a drawer. Downloaded MetaMask on a new phone, hit restore, typed the words in order and it was all there within 5 minutes. The device really is just an access point, not where the money actually lives.

The mistake I almost made was storing my seed phrase in my notes app on the same phone that broke. Luckily I had a paper backup too but it was way too close. Write it on paper, store it somewhere physical, and never photograph it. That is genuinely the only thing that matters when something goes wrong with the device.
